Day 57 SF-Yoga Works-Peggy Orr

Bolinas Coastal Cafe

Think Globally, Eat Locally

Seems impossible that after just a few thousand cliff-hangin’ switchbacks we’ll find ourselves on the swarmin’ 101, surrounded by trendy ‘hoods and spendy real estate.  Before headin’ through flora and fauna, saltwater and shoppin’ malls, the YoYo’s and The Ru savored the sights of Bolinas; a shrine to liberal nirvana of the magnificent Marin County coast – population 1,246.   One organic restaurant,  one health food store,  one cool yoga providin’ community center, loads of peace symbols,  and tons of “OM”bama signs… no wonder the shadowy organization “Bolinas Border Patrol” ripped down the signs pointin’ to their secret sanctuary .

Bolinas Surfers

Surfer's Paradise

Feelin’ fine from the salt air and good vibes from the artists, writers, eccentrics and surfers that make this seaside retreat their home, we head to Larkspur Landing to continue our amazing day .

Peggy Orr - YogaWorks Mill Valley teacher

Peggy Orr

The astute YoYo’s know that when we’re referred to a teacher a few dozen times…something’s goin’ on.  From Seattle to San Francisco, teachers and students alike communicated the dire importance of making it to Peggy Orr’s “not to miss” class while in the Bay.  Thanks to the “off the charts” energy and enthusiasm of June Katzen, manager of the stunning Yoga Works– Larkspur, the YoYo’s found ourselves warmly welcomed into Peggy’s 6 year strong,  jam-packed, mid- day class of loyal yogis. Today, we were to bear witness to the accomplishments of a steadfast practice with an inspiring and gifted teacher.

Peggy’s smooth voice and sax soundtrack resonated as she slowly unfolded a class that first warmed us and then encouraged us to find our unique practice within the structured guidelines of this beautifully sequenced class.  The YoYo’s couldn’t help but notice Peggy’s accomplished clan of resolute students  confidently pullin’ off one-of-a-kind modifications and sometimes even fuller expressions to the many testing asanas that Peggy introduced. Offering time and space to explore, 100- eyed Peggy observed every yogi’s pose while her talented hands offered flawless adjustments to those wanting to experiment with something challenging or new.

Safety in the hands of an expert, and security in this house of friends, these lucky yogis have built an incredible practice under the guiding eyes of this truly “not to miss” teacher.

Day 59 SF-Yogaworks-Karyn Holland

Road over Mt Tam

Road over Mt Tam

Today, we travel through hill and dale, forest and freeway; twistin’ and turnin’ our way back to The Bay to arrive at Yoga Works-Larkspur for our anxiously awaited Vinyasa 2-3 class with Karyn Holland.

Karyn Holland

Entering the stunning spa-like space, we were greeted with a high-spirited welcome from this tight-knit yogi family.   Our YoYo eye’s were  poppin’ as  bhakti-flowin’ manager, June Katzen, led the grand tour of all three delicious yoga rooms and unsurpassed everything yogi space filled with chic attire, library of inspirin’ books, and cool yogi side dishes. Hangin’ in bliss on the luscious couches enjoyin’ the extensive tea bar, the comfy YoYo’s toyed, for just a second, with the idea of pracitin’ savasana for a hour or three in this dazzlin’ lap of luxury; but time had come for the unsuspecting YoYo’s to enter their “velvet hammer” of a class.

Karyn opened this “good vibe” flow with a message of, “YES” to opportunity in our lives, “yes” in our hearts and most definitely “yes” in our practice. The unhurried steady pace and composed demeanor of our trickster teacher ensured the YoYo’s remain unaware that every muscle was being worked to its absolute max. Her precise, easy-to-follow coaching guaranteed these committed yogis used every hidden sinew correctly and kept strength of heart and mind to tackle even unfamiliar asanas.  It was easy to see that this fortunate class was being expertly guided by this caring teacher that loves to spread the positive message of “YES”.

Stinson Beach

Takin’ our cue from our optimistic guide, we said “Yes” to the Ru, the wise, kind, ol’, wantin’ to romp, grandfather cocker spaniel, who thought Stinson Beach would be a perfect spot to fill every crevasse with powdery sand, and check out the herd of seals playfully jumpin’ in the sea.  While the YoYo’s walked out our worked out bodies, we inhaled the serene sounds and exhaled the ginormous amounts of sand that The Ru felt compelled to shake in our smilin’ faces while blithely testin’ our new found yoga poses… compliments of our “most positive” class at Yoga Works- Larkspur.

Day 76 LA-Yogaworks-James Morrison

"24" King of Cool Bill Buchanan

"24's" King of Cool, Bill Buchanan

It was a sad, sad day in the YoYo household when the super-selective, T.V. watchin’ YoYos, viewed their screen in disbelief as it took the life of their favorite character on, the fast-paced, high-action, addictive “24”. How could this happen? Didn’t the writers understand that the YoYos tuned in weekly just to see the always stayin’ yogi-like, super-cool “boss of everything”, Bill Buchanan? Let’s just say, the YoYos were bummed.

Only in Hollywood

Only in Hollywood

Tonight, we head to Hollywood… home of swimmin’ pools and movie stars. Drivin’ by neglected communities borderin’ mansions the size of small countries, the YoYos finally arrive at Larchmont Village, a hip ‘hood of eclectic shops and outdoor cafes jam-packed with trendsetters savorin’ the warm summer night. Up the long staircase, we climb to discover the hip vibe and friendly faces at the illustrious Yogaworks Center for Yoga, located in the space of L.A’s first Yoga studio.

James Morrison - "24" Yogi Man

James Morrison "24's" Yogi Man

Mat touchin’ mat, the YoYos found our 2×6 in the back corner adjoinin’ unrecognizable percussion instruments. Waitin’ for class to begin, the YoYos’ jaw dropped when, like a beacon of welcome light, Bill, “the chillin’ even when the world is close to doom”, Buchanan, walked in and gave direction… to start on all 4’s”.

Now, the confused YoYos, thinkin’ they were caught in a “mind-game” movie, had been directed by a holy host of yogis to take this super-popular, distinctive “candlelight flow” class from teacher extraordinaire, James Morrison. But tonight, in this “only in Hollywood” space, it appeared James and Bill, were one and the same. Chief runner of covert operations, or kick-ass yoga instructor… the YoYos were just ecstatic to have their hero back, in the flesh.

James Morrison

Accompanied by the amazin’ sensual sounds of Soul Katuu, Rich Ferguson and Rich Mangicaro; warm, comical, relaxed James began this softly lit practice with his signature, easy style. The welcome tension releasin’ integration soon melted into familiar poses takin’ the guise of a free flowin’ dance as James led this eagar clan through an artistic series of taxing asana that challenged every sinew. Allowing an abundance of creative expression, this charismatic teacher encouraged this committed group to combine their breath and body with the vibration of soulful sounds that filled this expressive room. The YoYos love the sweat, laughs, freedom, ambiance, creative instruction, killer groove and the “most excellent” discovery that James can still be a weekly habit in the yoga studio, and on his new series, HawthoRNe.

Day 86 OC-Yogaworks-Geo Moskios

Peace at Sunrise

Peace at Sunrise

Not a soul on the glassy water, not a sound on the endless sea, the water-lovin’ YoYos sadly realize that our soon fleetin’ days on our funky “om away from home”, sailboat is comin’ to a close.

How proud we’ve been watchin’ The Ru; the wise, kind, old, “impressive controller of 7” long sea legs”, grandfather cocker spaniel, peacefully sleep through massive Pelican attacks.  This intimate space has brought us closer, literally… and through it all, the master “work around” YoYos have learned that the important things in life have nothin’ to do with stoves that yield heat, refrigerators that produce cold or toilets that flush with a simple flip of a handle. Nope, for these floatin’ YoYos, life’s significance is uncoverin’ the “most excellent” yoga, in hopes you’ll find bliss throwin’ down your well-worn mat in many super- inspired spaces.

Geo Moskios

Geo Moskios

Enterin’ the bright, smilin’, happy space that brands Yogaworks; we were greeted by the shinin’ eyes and open heart of today’s veteran teacher Geo Moskios, the first ever yogi to be invited to chat on Oprah’s famous couch.

Drawn to yoga as a way to unite the physical, intellectual and wondrous after a testing time in Vietnam, world-explorer Geo, trained extensively worldwide with several masters including Indra Devi, the first lady of yoga. Internalizing the wisdom of his gurus and drawin’ from wide-ranging travels,  intuitive Geo combined his discoveries to conceive a challengin’, distinctive, breath to movement, Power Class that was about to kick these YoYo butts all over beautiful Newport Beach.

Ru Gently Sleeps

Ru Gently Sleeps

Opening this fluid practice with a free-flowin’ integration series, Geo rapidly evolved into a seamlessly choreographed progression of strength and stretch sequences, ensuring every muscle was ignited throughout  this innovative leg-liftin’, butt-burnin’, body twistin’,  chataranga “galore” series.   Worked out and worked over, these sweatin’ YoYos were taken by this seriously joyful teacher whose rich life experiences were more than inspirin’ to a couple of road-trippin’, ocean-floatin’ YoYos.

But for now, its’ back to the boat to overlook the vast promise of the sea, and treasure one more pelican attack… while The Ru gently sleeps.

Day 100 LA-Yogaworks-Kia MIller

Today, on this “most excellent” 100th day of this epic journey; with bodies strong and minds followin’ along, the YoYo’s were electrified knowin’ that the so-called “conclusion” of this marathon yogic adventure was in reality, merely a “can’t put it down” chapter.  Amazed by the plethora of “not to miss” studios and talented teachers” linin’ the west coast, the “inquisitive” YoYos went over schedule in Seattle, Portland and San Francisco… oops!  With just a few more “off the charts” L.A. teachers on the calendar and the San Diego world of yoga still to be uncovered… the energized YoYos will carry on… as promised, all the way to the border.

Lia Miller

Kia Miller

So, with our “soon to be seen in yoga classes across the universe”, typed-dyed, “Groovy collection”, Yogitoes in hand; the “Summer of Love” YoYos, headed to the energy awakening Kundalini class, taught by the celebrated, charismatic teacher, Kia Miller, at Yogaworks Main in Santa Monica. Already pumped from the last 99 days, the YoYos were curious to see what form the coiled power that sits at the base of the spine would take, as this experienced guide would bring it up through all 7 chakras.

Kundalini Rising

Kundalini Rising

Illuminatin’ the room with her brilliant smile, Kia opened by ignitin’ this class with the “breath of fire,” followed by a series of blazin’, churnin’ asana.  Continuing through an inferno of moving postures, this talented guide challenged us to hold bhandas, drop our chin, lift our gaze and visualize the powerful spiralin’ energy from within,’ rising up, up, and away through the crown of our head, connectin’  earth energy with that of the infinite.  Whoa…good thing we were grounded into our super-psychedelic Yogitoes!

Ending with a most unusual rhythmic, WTH, arms to side and up over head, forever movement, Kia admitted she wasn’t sure how some weird cave dwellin’ yogi figured out how this exhaustive repetition could drive energy up and out…expandin’ our aura … but it did… and it was cool!

Once again, with the superb talent of brilliant guides, The YoYos are tappin’ into that www of the universe, and connectin’ as we continue, this “most excellent” adventure.
