Day 13 Seattle-Planet Earth Yoga-Laura Yon Brooks

Planet Earth Yoga Center

Planet Earth Yoga Center

On this bird-chirpin’, last Sunday in Seattle morning, a long smooth Hatha-Gaya class was just what the Doctor ordered.  Our YoYo bodies were feelin’ it in a big way, especially in the butt from walkin’ up and down every endless hill with The Ru; the wise, kind, old, grandfather –so cute he turns Seattleites into baby-talkin’ goo cocker spaniel. This morning we put ourselves in the experienced hands of Laura Yon-Brooks, Yoga Therapist and owner of Planet Earth Yoga Center, to begin in a new life energy that would rejuvenate us to “power it up” for the next 86 days!

We found Planet Earth Yoga as we passed the colorful Fremont Sunday Market, on the 2nd floor of a converted old house, brimming with character.  The unique studio space was spectacularly spacious and completely alive with activity from the tight group of Laura devotes’ who came to loosen and “love it up”.  Laura, a giving soul, laser-lead this happy bunch for the next 11/2 hours insisting on long, smooth, deep breaths complimenting every creative liquid movement.  Her easy to follow flows allowed the YoYos to feel the full depth of every asana and release any tense, tired muscles, hidin’ or not so hidin’, deep inside.  With precise instruction, Laura encouraged her students to find their breath, their rhythm and flow beautifully with it, creating a dance-like movement.

Laura’s healing doesn’t stop in her studio; she has been sharing her special gift of recovery and rejuvenation with cancer patients for the past 10 years at the University of Washington Medical Center.  Seems to the YoYos that folks in this ‘hood are lucky to have this Seattle Sister!

We left flyin’, butt muscles feelin’ 10 years younger, over to the YoYoYogi mobile that was waiting to take us to a most excellent treat!

Now, while we love our 400 square foot Queen Anne Studio, when generously offered the outrageous, Puget Sound huggin’ Edgewater Hotel, by yoga and pet lovin’ manager,  Ric Nicholson,  the YoYos cried “SCORE”! With Ru in tow, we walked into the lap of luxury, bounced on the ginormous down bed, soaked in the claw foot tub then melted into the soft leather chairs (mac on lap) by the glow of the fireplace and stared at sailboats on the Sound. Lucky for us, we still have 2 glorious days to enjoy The Emerald City!

Day 55 SF-Yoga Tree-Dina Amsterdam

Dina Amsterdam

Dina Amsterdam

The “off the charts” action at Yoga Tree-Castro piqued the YoYo’s curiosity as to what we’d find at the Valencia location of this San Francisco yoga powerhouse.   Excitedly, we ventured to seize our very first “YinYang”  class of our roadtrippin’ journey with intuitive teacher, Dina Amsterdam, who was recognized as the “Best Teacher in San Francisco” by San Francisco Magazine in 2007.

Mat to mat, the yogis looked so peaceful all lyin’ on their backs in this dimly lit, narrow space with eyes closed, bolsters under knees, blankets under head, with the penetrating sound of a gong-bell-bowl  radiatin’ through the vast room.  After 55 “most excellent” yoga days, the YoYo’s thought this jam-packed slumber party was lookin’ real good, so we joined in on the much appreciated, lack of activity.

Mukund Sabramanian

Leavin’ the yogis in their comatose position, Dina began class by encouragin’ this blissed-out bunch to send breath to their energy centers, chakras, which she focused on, one by one. Leisurely, she moved this barely movin’ group into the widest, longest child’s pose in child pose history and a series of forever held asanas that let our muscles rest, while we ignited our connective tissue.  The ambiance of candle glow, gentle voice of our gifted guide, and the LIVE, healing, vibrational music performed by Mukund, intensely penetrated our YoYo mind, and bodies.  Feelin’ kinda cozy on our Mandukas, we used our breath to transistion into Dina’s perfect, slow Yang flow.  So relaxed were we from this beautiful practice, the YoYo’s visualized this bein’ their late night, every night class.

Peace from the People of Bolinas

Peace from the People of Bolinas

Off to the ocean to the TINY town of Bolinas.  The YoYo’s knew they couldn’t pass up stayin’, if just for a couple days, in this beach town full of eccentric hippies that packed it up and moved it out to escape the preverbal rat race. Seems these folks like isolation so much, that they pulled down all signs markin’ their oasis, makin’ it a little hard for the midnight travelin’ YoYo’s to find where the heck we were headed.  Just followin’ the sound of the sea…we knew …we had arrived.

Day 82 LA-Exhale-Lynda Carré

So what are the “can’t stop now” YoYos to do when suddenly realizin’ that 82 days of mind expandin’, body stretchin’, peace providin’ practices leaves them close to the end of their epic 100 studios in 100 days journey; with still a plethora of “kick-ass” studios loaded on their calendar? How ‘bout takin’ the deepest breath of our “most excellent” road trip and upgrade the tag line to “365 Days of Discovery”. With killer San Diego studios on our immediate view screen, and “not to miss” invites floodin’ in, the YoYos think it’s high time to dig a little deeper and mix it up a bit more.

While still uncoverin’ the most excellent guides, we’ll be addin’ workshops, insights and “off the chart” places to throw down your mat. Kirtan, karma, breath, partner, meditation, sound, chakras, inversions; yoga for stress, disease, discovery and unsung yogis who are bringin’ yoga off their mat and out to their communities…we’ll hit it all as the next chapter unfolds, but for now, we finish combin’ the West, makin’ sure we’ve uncovered the gold.

Tonight, we venture into the cherished Yin/Restorative class of Lynda Carre’; renown CD, book cover and yoga wear artist for many of Yoga’s shinin’ stars and tonight’s celebrated teacher at Santa Monica’s urban sanctuary, Exhale. The thoroughly worked through YoYos couldn’t think of a better way to spend the “Eve of Global Mala”, where they’ll be lovin’ every sun salutation for peace, than with creative Lynda in this long, slow, deep, upside down and sideways; connective tissue stretch.

Openin’ with free-flowin’, body swayin’, sacred movement set to soft, sensual sounds, this playful 20-year practitioner encouraged each peace-seekin’ yogi to find their own unique rhythm before holdin’ the guided, forever held, magical asana that releases from deep within. Workin’ through the lower spine, hips, legs, and feet; Lynda opened our bodies as she worked our minds, endin’ with lasting effects from the most restful savasana. YO Lynda! thanks for that mediation in slow motion and we’ll be thinkin’ of the gift of you, as we salute that glorious sun …108 times.
