Day 91 San Diego-Bird Rock-Luke Wientzen

Arrivin’ in “surf city” San Diego; the stoked YoYos discovered that seemingly everyone who wasn’t already surfin’ “choka” waves, were runnin’ toward them, “wet-suited up”, with stick in hand. Seems every vertical cliff looks like the pages of Surfer Magazine, with core dudes “hanin’ ten”. Businesses caterin’ to this area’s singular lifestyle thrive on the bustlin’ streets as the unfortunate few that aren’t “steppin’ into the liquid”, travel on their cement brethren skateboards, while pushin’ baby strollers loaded with the family groceries. Yep, surfin’ is life here in SD and this addictive sport, which is as much a part of this ocean lifestyle as breathin’, has been welcomed into San Diego Yoga Studios, everywhere.

Today, the YoYos enter super-popular, “Bird Rock Yoga” in Pacific Beach which readers voted “Best” Yoga Studio in 944 Magazine and The Beach and Bay Press. Takin’ it’s from name from the original location in “Bird Rock”, a fiercely local surfin’ spot, the “Barney” YoYos were to take their very first “surfers flow” class from yogi and “gandelf” surfer, Luke Wientzen.

Welcomed into the peaceful, soothin’, dimly lit, studio by the playful puppy mascot that apparently loves yogis and headless turtle toys; a crowd of surfers found their “chillin’” space and just “hung loose” while allowin’ their bare-chested, baggie wearin’, teacher time to get out of the water and into class.

Beginning in child’s pose, our “zimzala” leader Luke, guided this ocean obsessed clan into a deep connection with the breath, continually remindin’ that this essential element was the heart of every asana and every moment of this 75 minute, “cooleo” flow. Focusing on an inclusive total body strength practice with killer concentration on that all important “surfer” core, this “no worries” guide gave ample time to glide through every transition and deeply feel every fluid pose, throwin’ in a little anti-gravity postures for the “swami” surfer/yogi’s.

Lovin’ the stretch, glidin’ movements and epic energy that filled this “cookin’” space, the “hodad” YoYos were convinced that takin’ their ankle-bustin’ slidin’ skills off the mountain snow and onto the “redonculous” waves might just be their next giant leap, in this “gnarlatious” adventure.
