Day 31 Lake Tahoe-Yoga Spa-Hank

Big Blue - Lake Tahoe

The Yo Yos "OM" - Lake Tahoe

Hangin’ on Mount Rose, eighty five hundred feet above sea level, gazin’down at the jaw-droppin’ beauty of Lake Tahoe, the YoYo’s are gaspin’ at the gorgeousness and… for a simple breath of air as they struggle to inhale the famous site below.  The “you gotta be kiddin’ me”, aqua-blue color of one of the clearest lakes in the world draws bazillions of the most excellent travelers to mess around in its icy water, sun-bake on the endless stretches of white sand beaches and explore the giant surrounding peaks. This perfect all-season playground is the killer backdrop for Yoga Spa Tahoe – the place where the YoYo’s “OM” when at home.

Big Blue

Big Blue

This hidden yogi gem sits in the shadow of the Sierra Nevada’s and is just a stone’s throw from “Big Blue.”  Creative owner and teacher, Kim Malinowski spared no expense to design a first-class “spa-like “studio that makes that, “when we gonna get there?” road trip dissolve into distant memory!

Bliss it out, or power it up…you’re going find it at this all levels, “cater to yogis on the GO-GO,” studio where the classes are as varied as the teachers. Hot Yoga, Swaropa, Hatha, Vinyasa Flow, and the YoYo’s sweaty, steamy Power classes all seem to leave the visiting yogis sitting in lotus resisting an unexplained urge to wear snow beanies in the middle of summer and chant the Lake Tahoe mantra, “No worries, it’s all good!”

Hank

Hank

Tricky to find, Yoga Spa Tahoe is located right above High Altitude Fitness, Incline Village’s premiere sports center with the most terrifying climbing wall the YoYo’s have ever seen.  The YoYo’s were happy to pass and go straight into our “can’t miss” Hatha class with Hank (no last name… just Hank).  This cool Tahoe yogi, lookin’ like an even cooler So-Cal surfer, shares his joy of life and hilarious anologies while giving the most excellent “only in Tahoe” soul full, long, stretchy, ever-changing class custom made for loosenin’ it up after a day of hikin’, bikin’, boatin’, swimmin’, golfin’, climbin’, kayakin’, paddleboardin’, or just chillin’-Tahoe Style.

Day 32 Lake Tahoe-Tahoe Yoga-Bill & Mark

Old Town Truckee

Old Town Truckee

Passing the high altitude, old-town, down-town,  old west turned hip alpine community packed with happenin’ hot spots, groovy  places to grab a brew and “not for the light of wallet” boutiques; the YoYos were on their way to Tahoe’s premiere yoga studio – Tahoe Yoga and Wellness Center. This inspired, holistic space owned by Chiropractor and Yoga Instructor, Walter Lightner, draws on the talents of the most sought after teachers in the area and hosts a continual calendar of yogi superstar workshops and classes.

“Eye of the Tiger”…  curiosity on fire, the YoYo’s  had to know more about this popular, 6am, bi-monthly event  that draws new and repeat students from places far beyond the borders of its home in Truckee, California.

Bill Folkmann

Bill Folkmann

Super charming, polar opposites, Bill Folkmann and Mark Lundbeck, creators of this advanced practice casually began with a just a few welcoming words and 30+ sun salutations.  The YoYos have to admit, they wondered, during the magical meditative motion, how many times they were goin’ to welcome the sun in this captivating region that always seems to shine.

Alternately, these engaging talented teachers replaced the precise, demonstrated instruction with challenging asanas held until every yogi in that room became friends with their connective tissue.  Rotation and alignment focused, the YoYo’s learned things about their armpits and inner thighs… they will not soon forget.  Fun, focused, stimulating and intensely perfect, The YoYos walked away from this “good reason to live in Tahoe” class, feeling alive, strong, energized and ready to take their yoga off the mat and straight to that sparkling lake.

Kayak Heaven - Lake Tahoe

Kayak Heaven - Lake Tahoe

Cold clear water and bright hot sun; the paddle lovin’ YoYo’s took off on a most breathtaking glide through the cobalt waters of Lake Tahoe.  Explorin’ every massive volcanic rock while lookin’ for lost treasures 100’ feet below in the crystal clear water, our boats split the water in two as we said,  “hello” to our 30+ sun salutation shoulders and deep ujaiyi breath. Paddlin’ up to a secluded white sand beach, we discovered a most excellent driftwood “Love Shack” most likely built by an idle summer snowboarder ….The YoYo’s again recited the Tahoe mantra, “it’s all good”… at 7,000 feet!

Day 34 Lake Tahoe-Wanderlust-John Friend

After leavin’ our most exciting Power “Om” class this morning, the YoYo’s heard… “All we are saaaayin’, is Give Peace a Chance”, wafting in the air from hundreds of yogis who, on this closing day of Wanderlust; the all yoga, all music…all the time festival, had just finished one of their back to back classes with the universal message of peace, love and happiness. Peace signs, tie dye, leather stuff and a virtual all day group hug permeated this “why can’t we just live like this?” festival.

Following the melodic lyrics of the smilin’ faced yogis over to a rocky “field of gold”, the Yogis threw down their “glad we have the guaranteed for life” Manduka, far away from the massive stage separated by shiny happy yogis holdin’ hands.  Here, we waited patiently for our most anticipated class with John Friend.

Not so fast Yo Yo’s… here comes the party!  MC Yogi jumped on stage and fired up this “ready to rip it crowd” with the “Hanuman, the Monkey God” rap, accompanied by flyin’ acro-yogis in gold lame’, hula hoopers-hoopin’ on their heads and outrageously fun yogi wear on outrageously fun yogis.  Just burnin’ it up on this hot day…  John Friend joined this groovin’ group on stage.

John Friend

John Friend

Summin’ it all up in one sentence, John joyously began by explaining that alignment and continual practice will make your body strong…but it is through love and devotion that yoga becomes spiritual…(loosely translated by a YoYo).  When the YoYo’s, who communicate in paragraphs the size of The Bible, hear something so simply beautiful…well, we connected and melted into that rock bed and had the best “under the sun” practice of our life.  Bliss, devotion, authenticity and pure love come to mind when we think of what John Friend brought to this heart-opening practice magnificently accompanied by Jai Uttal.

Wrappin’ up the practice, Jai Uttal, busted out his spiritual music into a dancin,’ singin’ yogi fest unlike anything ever witness by these two YoYo’s.  We’re pretty sure that if you live in North America, you most likely heard the song, and felt joy that was comin’ from the mountains today!

Wanderlust 2010- count us in!

OM Sweet Home – Lake Tahoe

What’s a YoYo to do after 100 days on the road?

Piles of laundry comes to mind…along with perusin’ mountains of mail and takin’ YoYoYogimobile to the doctor after its border to border marathon; remindin’ these happy road trippers that the eternal crap ‘o life goes on…even while havin’ a most excellent adventure.

Fall at Lake Tahoe

Fall at Lake Tahoe

Today, the YoYos surround themselves with everything familiar.  The “just like clockwork” changin’ colors of the majestic trees, the sparklin’ diamonds reflectin’ off  the icy waters of the cobalt lake and the crisp feel of the mountain air that’s forcin’ our nothin’ but flip-flop wearin’ expanded feet into our somehow shrunken snow mocks.  Ahhhh… the weather it is changin’ at speed ‘o sound here in Lake Tahoe and the tad homesick YoYos are pleased to be sportin’ beanies and fuzzy socks, if only for the next few days, while mappin’ out our “most expanded” YoYo plans.

100 Days of bringin’ the “best of the west”, has clued the “learnin’ as we go” YoYos, that we’ve scarcely scratched the surface of this amazin’ world of yoga.  The body stretchin’, peace-providin’ teachers that we’ve met seemingly take a much deeper dive into their most elevatin’, stimulatin’ world, through enriching workshops and life-changin’ retreats.   The “unable to go back to original form”, YoYo minds understand they must explore what goes on in those mysterious sanctuaries; Anusara jams, 3- hour ‘butt in air” inversion classes, alignment practicum, flyin-yogi clinics,  heart-explodin’ seminars and, all the while, attempt to paraphrase  those “most excellent” experiences on the virtual pages of YoYoYogi.com.  So…it’s off we go!

Sianna Sherman

Sianna Sherman

After a few sacred days with mat in front of fire and Bryan Kest’s, kick ass i-pod downloads in our ears, the YoYos and The Ru, in the once again ready to rumble YoYoYogimobile, will take off to the wonderment of Northern California’s wine country.  Here, we’ll be explorin’ those purple mountains majesties above the fruited plains, visit Napa/Sonoma’s signature studios, and  fill our explodin’ minds with the teachings of world renowned Anusara teacher, Sianna Sherman at  Community Yoga in the eye-poppin’ village of Sonoma, California …

And in the evenin’…of course, partake of the vine!

Cole Family Rock

Trail to Cole Family Rock

Trail to Cole Family Rock

With BIG rain in the forecast accompanied by signature Sierra “hang on” sideways wind, the mountain livin’ YoYos knew that today, was possibly the last day to experience the fall colors before they ended up in a ginormous heap, on the soon to be snow covered mountains.  So, out the nature racin’ YoYos travel; straight up right angles in search of that quintessential autumn beauty and the illusive oxygen that used to fill our lungs prior to our 116 days at sea level.

Ah The Sierras in Autumn

Pausin' at Ottoman Rock

It is here, we will take our practice off the mat and onto, “Cole Family Rock”, the massive boulder with a killer view.  It was good to see the ‘ol gang along the way, Ottoman Rock and Flat Top Rock… and good to know they hadn’t changed at bit.  The awed `YoYos  stood in familiar reverence of fall in the Sierras, when seemingly no peeps or animals appear.

Silent Meditation on Cole Family Rock

Silent Meditation on Cole Family Rock

Nope, it was just the YoYos and the Ru, the wise ‘ol kind, most excellent roadtrippin’ companion, grandfather cocker spaniel; hangin’ at our favorite waterfalls while takin’ time to enjoy the rapidly changin’ scenery. It was here we would do our yoga… our yoga that had maybe changed a tad since leavin’ nearly 4 months ago.  This new stuff; the mental, thankful, quiet yoga that we’d be doin’ today out here in this forested sanctuary, was kinda new to the YoYo a Go Gos.

So we practiced, as we sat, just the three of us… yogin’ it up, on our ginormous bolder… in silence.
