The RU get's ready to head h"OM"e

The RU readies for the trip h"OM"e

Endless dark nor chill o’ night could keep the YoYos from gettin’ their crazy asses up at 3am and cramin’ into the artistically packed YoYoYogimobile, turned travelin’ luxury resort, for The Ru; the wise, kind, ol’, “lookin’ fine  from his “U Wash Doggie” encounter, grandfather cocker spaniel . Yep, the Ru requested comfort as he readied himself for the unhurried drive to the mountains where he’d take carroty-colored autumn hikes, reflect on his YoYo-a-Go Go adventure, and tap into www. Universe for answers on how to open out his explodin’ column.

Felicia Tomasko

Felicia Tomasko

The “eyes barely open” YoYos knew that a most excellent way to evolve into Chapter 2 of their continuin’ adventure was in the early mornin’ flow class of new pal, Felicia Tomasko.  Happily zippin’ up the coast, the just skatin’ YoYos were warmly welcomed into the happenin’, 7am yogi community of the Montecito YMCA.  Here, lucky residents of this coastal jewel eagerly awaited their dynamic teacher whose vast credentials include Editor in Chief of LA Yoga Magazine, practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine and RN.  Seems this energetic yogi splits her capable time by teachin’ in this eye-poppin’ beach village and coverin’ the happenings of the dynamic L.A. yoga scene.

Greeted by welcomin’ smiles into this tight knit clan, the YoYos joined this lucky beach bunch as Felicia slowly opened and released every tight from sittin’ muscle.  Intermixin’ friendly conversation, this happy group embraced their carin’ teacher who knew their names, their stories, and their bodies as she worked through the familiar room, giving each dedicated yogi individual attention and adjustments. The YoYos loved the easy feel and immense knowledge of this east meets west medical whiz who shared the physical benefits of each posture while stetchin’ and strengthin’ the dedicated in this all levels class.

Headin' back to Lake Tahoe

Headin' back to Lake Tahoe

Takin’ off to finish the  9 ½ hours up this beautiful coast;  through valleys, hills and farms… the roatrippin’ YoYos had time to think about their yogic adventures practiced at luxury spas, community centers and garages;  their solo practices on sandy shores and in jam packed spaces; with unknown “not to miss” teachers and the superstars of yoga… What an exciting’ openin’ chapter the grateful YoYos have had on this “most excellent” adventure!

OM Sweet Home – Lake Tahoe

What’s a YoYo to do after 100 days on the road?

Piles of laundry comes to mind…along with perusin’ mountains of mail and takin’ YoYoYogimobile to the doctor after its border to border marathon; remindin’ these happy road trippers that the eternal crap ‘o life goes on…even while havin’ a most excellent adventure.

Fall at Lake Tahoe

Fall at Lake Tahoe

Today, the YoYos surround themselves with everything familiar.  The “just like clockwork” changin’ colors of the majestic trees, the sparklin’ diamonds reflectin’ off  the icy waters of the cobalt lake and the crisp feel of the mountain air that’s forcin’ our nothin’ but flip-flop wearin’ expanded feet into our somehow shrunken snow mocks.  Ahhhh… the weather it is changin’ at speed ‘o sound here in Lake Tahoe and the tad homesick YoYos are pleased to be sportin’ beanies and fuzzy socks, if only for the next few days, while mappin’ out our “most expanded” YoYo plans.

100 Days of bringin’ the “best of the west”, has clued the “learnin’ as we go” YoYos, that we’ve scarcely scratched the surface of this amazin’ world of yoga.  The body stretchin’, peace-providin’ teachers that we’ve met seemingly take a much deeper dive into their most elevatin’, stimulatin’ world, through enriching workshops and life-changin’ retreats.   The “unable to go back to original form”, YoYo minds understand they must explore what goes on in those mysterious sanctuaries; Anusara jams, 3- hour ‘butt in air” inversion classes, alignment practicum, flyin-yogi clinics,  heart-explodin’ seminars and, all the while, attempt to paraphrase  those “most excellent” experiences on the virtual pages of YoYoYogi.com.  So…it’s off we go!

Wine Country Harvest Time

Wine Country Harvest Time

Sianna Sherman

Sianna Sherman

After a few sacred days with mat in front of fire and Bryan Kest’s, kick ass i-pod downloads in our ears, the YoYos and The Ru, in the once again ready to rumble YoYoYogimobile, will take off to the wonderment of Northern California’s wine country.  Here, we’ll be explorin’ those purple mountains majesties above the fruited plains, visit Napa/Sonoma’s signature studios, and  fill our explodin’ minds with the teachings of world renowned Anusara teacher, Sianna Sherman at  Community Yoga in the eye-poppin’ village of Sonoma, California …

And in the evenin’…of course, partake of the vine!

Cole Family Rock

Trail to Cole Family Rock

Trail to Cole Family Rock

With BIG rain in the forecast accompanied by signature Sierra “hang on” sideways wind, the mountain livin’ YoYos knew that today, was possibly the last day to experience the fall colors before they ended up in a ginormous heap, on the soon to be snow covered mountains.  So, out the nature racin’ YoYos travel; straight up right angles in search of that quintessential autumn beauty and the illusive oxygen that used to fill our lungs prior to our 116 days at sea level.

Ah The Sierras in Autumn

Pausin' at Ottoman Rock

It is here, we will take our practice off the mat and onto, “Cole Family Rock”, the massive boulder with a killer view.  It was good to see the ‘ol gang along the way, Ottoman Rock and Flat Top Rock… and good to know they hadn’t changed at bit.  The awed `YoYos  stood in familiar reverence of fall in the Sierras, when seemingly no peeps or animals appear.

Silent Meditation on Cole Family Rock

Silent Meditation on Cole Family Rock

Nope, it was just the YoYos and the Ru, the wise ‘ol kind, most excellent roadtrippin’ companion, grandfather cocker spaniel; hangin’ at our favorite waterfalls while takin’ time to enjoy the rapidly changin’ scenery. It was here we would do our yoga… our yoga that had maybe changed a tad since leavin’ nearly 4 months ago.  This new stuff; the mental, thankful, quiet yoga that we’d be doin’ today out here in this forested sanctuary, was kinda new to the YoYo a Go Gos.

So we practiced, as we sat, just the three of us… yogin’ it up, on our ginormous bolder… in silence.

And Now We Do Yoga

Patanjali’s 1st sutra says “atha yogānusaśānam” or “now begins the sacred instruction of union.” Or… as we heard it on Day 54 from Katchie Aanada in San Francisco, “And now we do yoga.”

OM_SymbolYou meet lots o’ yogis, hear tons o’ stories and learn a gazillion life lessons when spendin’ 117 consecutive days practicin’  yoga in 117 unique places.  This most “excellent adventure” showed the discoverin’ YoYos  that there are seemingly as many paths to yoga as there are yogis.

Now, we talked to border-to border yogis, who found this ancient practice a last resort cure for injury after all other medical options have failed.  Others, a last ditch effort to calm a tormented mind or heal a spiritual hole. Some, after every “thigh blaster” and 24/7 visit to the gym, simply thought toned muscles and a lifted butt sounded spot on……New Age Body Sculpting?

No matter what brings us to the mat… yoga begins to work its magic.   Bodies strengthen and become more limber…  minds quiet and become more clear.  Life views begin to change… we start breathin’ rather than ragin’ when encounterin’  life’s forever tryin’ situations.  We consider usin’ a metal water bottle rather than plastic, walk instead of drive, and notice what slime is fillin‘ the 24 hour news cycle of our mind.   Slowly,  there’s a realization that there’s a connection between each of us and this planet we live on.

Yoga is for everyone and lucky are those who find it.. or yoga finds them.. at this time, on their “most excellent” life adventure.

Now, we do yoga…

Rush Hour on the Universal Highway

Bear in Bhujangasana (Cobra)

Bear in Bhujangasana (Cobra)

The YoYos, back in Lake Tahoe, were intensely experiencin’ the drama of non-stop, full- out wind action that artistically blows “furry animal in weird yoga pose” cloud formations.  While good to be back in the front row seats of this “theatre in the sky”, the patient YoYos wait for a slight break in the wild weather to make our tumultuous getaway, over the scary mountain pass to the dazzlin’ wine country of Sonoma, California.  It is there we are to experience our first “Anusara Jam” with world renowned teacher, Sianna Sherman, at Community Yoga.

Or are we?

Scholarly RU

Scholarly RU

Apparently, the California highway stimulus package discovered our “ripped to shreds” mountain highway, and thought this ‘tween season an ideal time to bring in every gravel truck and tar dumper in the state, makin’ our quick escape… an impossible dream.  As the winds subsided and hours passed, the “finally down the mountain and into the valley” YoYos, were sadly dumped smack in the midst of Friday night rush hour.  Crap!

It was pretty obvious that the “never late” YoYos were gonna be hangin’ with The Ru; the wise, kind, ‘ol scholarly, grandfather cocker spaniel in the YoYoYogimobile, playin’ “I know an animal”, while peace, love, happiness and whole buncha awesome asana was bein’ taught by this most respected teacher. What’s the disappointed YoYos to do after 7 hours into this 3 ½ drive?  Keep on inchin’ down the freeway, through the vineyards and up the state to make our way to life-long friends came to mind.

Cozad? Really?

Cozad? Really?

So, with anticipated class long over and traffic long gone…off we went.  Here, we heard hilarious accounts of class reunions in Cozad, Nebraska, shared the harebrained chronicles of the travelin’ YoYos, and laughed until we ran out of breath.  How happy were we to trade in this never-endin’ night ‘o obstacles with a ton o’ love… from friends.

What a “most excellent” adventure!

To Every Season

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma Valley by Susan Hoehn

Travelin’ through the magnificent colors of the autumn vines, massive oaks, and the indescribable flora and fauna that identifies Sonoma, California; the YoYos found the hidden jewel that wine country yogis lovingly know as, Yoga Community.

Community Yoga Gathering Place

Yoga Community Gathering Place

Welcomed into the blaze of shades that mimic its exterior surroundings, we took a peaceful minute to melt into the circled-up comfy chairs made for chattin’, drink the yummy tea brewed for blissin’, and peruse the outrageous yogi fashion that was creatively displayed throughout this artsy sanctuary. What an eye-poppin’ studio to throw down our mornin’ mat and ready ourselves for the gift of Lisa Murray; a certified teacher in the Walt Baptiste method of Raja Yoga; Sherri Baptiste’s Power of Yoga Teacher Training program. After intensive study with Dr. Mehrad Nazari, Michele Hébert and Sherri Baptiste, master teachers the grateful YoYos had the opportunity to learn from on this journey, the YoYos couldn’t think of a better way to conclude Chapter One, of this “most excellent” adventure.

Lisa Murray

Lisa Murray

Here, the unsuspectin’ YoYos followed this talented teacher through 90 minutes of challenging asana, bookend by deep rest.  Every taxing pose was chased by time to discover how body and mind felt after vigorous effort was followed by spacious relaxation.  And so it was, in Lisa’s serendipitous class… sun and moon…. time for action and time for rest.    Or, as it has been said… “To every season…

These roadtrippin’ YoYos on the Go Go, are admittedly pretty much experts on the full-out action part but with so much to do… like transition our slightly lifted YoYo butts to the Pacific Northwest to write our “most excellent” yoga adventure book,  start a cool new blog series like the one comin’ from our crazy Seattle explorer/reporter “My first 30 days of Yoga”, and work on our own “Power “Om” class, we aren’t exactly sure how to nail that all important, rest thing.

So, with an insightful send off from our gifted guide, the “tryin’ to be still” YoYos respectfully take the advice of the ancient wisdom of the Gita, the Sutras, the Bible, and the Sun and Moon…

Now, it is time to take Rest, if only for a short time, after our “most excellent” adventure.

Cha-Cha-Changes

Cha-Cha-Cha-Changes

Was it really only months ago that the roadtrippin’ YoYos found themselves in Seattle where the butt crack ‘o dawn appeared in the mid o’ night and was still shinin’ at the 10 pm happy hours? WTH… this brisk morn the sun didn’t crack its hidin’ head until way after the “Big Wheel” had already made a couple of laps and The Ru had gone for his “I’m back” walk in the ‘hood.

Seems this changin’ of the guard was most masterfully designed … givin’ us lucky yogis a gigantic excuse to take few moments to reflect while we ready ourselves for the vast possibilities that exist, if only we are wise enough to “chill” and notice what they are.  Just like summer and winter battle for victory in their day to day season changin’ combat… the urban to mountain dwellin’ YoYos, fight their habitual need for speed with the powerful weapon of tranquility.   Tappin’ into this peaceful internal refuge, YoYoYogiman discovers most appreciated space to put finishin’ touches on his class of the “most excellent” kind…“Power Om”.

Old Town Truckee

Old Town Truckee

Tonight, the YoYos head to celebrated Sierra studio, Tahoe Yoga and Wellness, home to zillions of top-notch yogi workshops.  It is here in Truckee, California, historic western town turned California cool, that world-class athletes mix it up with world traveled tourist and occasionally spotted, Paul Mc Cartney, who jams incognito at the super-hip, unpretentious bars.

Kinder-Gentler YoYoYogiman

Kinder-Gentler YoYoYogiman

Tonight‘s class turns to roadtrippin’ lessons learned from the great yogi sages of the west.  Leavin’ mere months ago as a full-out, body-burnin’, hot and super-steamy “Power” broker, and returnin’ as a kinder, gentler, more enlightened ass-kicker; YoYoYogiman’s tip-to-toe body releasin’ practice provided these mountain yogis with a deeper, slower pace and a virtual treasure map to uncover secret strength, undiscovered stretch and a stillness of mind that welcomes those creative, change o’ seasons juices to flow.

It’s good to be back in the Mountains… its’ good to look forward to the unwritten future… and wondrous to be living each “most excellent” moment in the present.

Mind-Bendin’ Body-Stretchin’ Peace-Providin’ Yoga

Was it really a year ago today that we were leavin’ Portland? Tears fillin’ our little eyes and pains in our larger than little butt cheek(s) from just 30 days of ass-kickin’ asana… only 70 studios to go.  Crossin’ our final bridge in “OR E Gone”, away we flew, down the coast, open to adventures unknown.

Sad were we when our “100 studios in 100 days”  came to a close. But, happy to be slingin’ a heart full of inspiration from the “best of the west” teachers and, from shiny, happy yogis everywhere!

Now What?… Where To?…  and, like a vision we knew.

Armed with the schoolin’ that yoga was a hell of a lot more than just a good sweat, we knew we just had to bring this “most excellent” adventure to life.

Sooooooo, here, in the chosen land of Portland, Oregon we’d be openin’ our bricks and mortar flagship studio and offerin’ mind-bendin’, body stretchin’ peace providin’ yoga to one and all.  Virgin Yoga, Take Flight Yoga, Yogaaaaaah, Not Yo Mama’s Yoga, Soul-Stretchin’ Yoga,  Happy Yoga, Inspired Yoga, Samurai Yoga, Gotta Have Heart Yoga, Nap-time Yoga, Pre-Func Yoga, and… we’d be sharin’ the love with young and old, thin and thick, big dudes and tiny grandmas everywhere.  The doors would fly right open for all those who told us yoga was ONLY for the bendy, vegan-eatin’, pretzel variety…. Ha! HaHa!… we exclaim!

Not at YoYoYogi!

Classes Begin August 16th, 2010

It’s Live!

It’s LIVE…

“Our new studio website is LIVE” we cry, as tears of JOY start  fillin’ our blurry little eyes after a 72 hour, caffeine frenzied, web-buildin’ marathon.  How proud we stood starin’ at our old friend … MAC, that he, and we, remained still functionin’ after this seemingly endless exercise in equanimity.  Yoga, is after all, stayin’ calm in a… difficult situation.  We scored about a 3.

Hope you like it!
